| Good Fish Program
A component of the Good Fish Program is a part of the Coastal
Alliance for Aquaculture Reforms' Farmed and Dangerous Campaign.
The Farmed and Dangerous Campaign was launched in October 2002,
and aims to educate consumers, retailers and restaurants about
the negative impacts of salmon farming, and the solutions and
alternatives currently available. The campaign was designed to
be a sophisticated movement involving direct negotiations with
key gatekeepers (chefs and grocery stores), as well as leveraging
consumer demand and purchasing power to gain the reforms in industry
that the campaign seeks.
Campaign milestones have included the placement of a controversial
ad targeting big supermarkets in the New York Times, engaging
in discussions with Whole Foods, Wild Oats, and Safeway, and coordinating
a peaceful protest in front of Safeway’s Pleasanton head offices
during their 2004 annual shareholder meeting. This action resulted
in a meeting with top Safeway executives in the subsequent months.
To date, more than 100 restaurants and grocery stores have signed
on to the campaign by pledging not to sell farmed salmon until
it is proven to be a safe and sustainable food product. The combination
of educational presentations, meetings, mailings, and organized
events will continue to make up the bulk of the campaign’s efforts.
